The oldest references to Sintra’s mechanical clock tower date back to the 15th century. This steep stone masonry tower was partially destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, after which restoration works were carried out. The clock tower of today is housed under a curved dome, surmounted by a spindle, topped by a weathervane with small vases and pointed ends. Two of the bells bear the dates 1773 and 1791 respectively.
