Muito provavelmente, a primeira igreja paroquial de São Pedro, localizada no Castelo dos Mouros, no sítio de Canaferrim foi edificada em meados do século XII, terá constituído, assim, a primeira paroquial sintrã. No século XIV, porém, o progressivo despovoamento do Castelo e a transferência da sede paroquial para a Igreja de São Pedro de Penaferrim ditaram o abandono do medievo templo, o qual, já no século XVIII se apresentava arruinado, conforme se pode ler nas Memórias Paroquiais.
Este templo, consiste num pequeno edifício de nave única com capela-mor pouco profunda, onde ainda se vislumbram, apesar de muito diluídos, alguns frescos medievais. O pórtico principal já desapareceu, mas, no alçado sul, conserva-se ainda o portal, onde se destacam os capitéis com representações vegetalistas e elementos figurados, nomeadamente animais fantásticos (basiliscos, grifos ou dragões).

Heritage of fundamental value in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra
The original parish church of São Pedro, located in the Moorish Castle, in Canaferrim was most probably built in the mid 12th century and was, therefore, Sintra’s first parish church. In the 14th century, however, the progressive decline in the number of inhabitants of the castle and transfer of the seat of the parish to the Igreja de São Pedro de Penaferrim dictated the abandonment of this medieval temple which parish records show had already fallen into disrepair in the 18th century.
This temple comprises a small, single-naved building with a relatively shallow chancel in which several badly faded medieval frescoes can still be made out. Although its main portico no longer exists, the church’s southern elevation still retains a portal whose capitals depict vegetal representations and figurative elements in the form of fantastic animals such as basilisks, griffins and dragons.
