O arquiteto Raul Lino foi contratado por Carlos Machado Ribeiro Ferreira para construir o seu palacete estival em Sintra. Apesar da difícil orografia do terreno de implantação, o projeto integrou e harmonizou o edificado com a paisagem natural e construída da envolvente, organizando a distribuição dos vários espaços a partir de volumetrias desniveladas.
Na entrada principal, voltada para a estrada, patenteiam-se três arcos cegos de volta perfeita. Assim, o primeiro corresponde à porta, o segundo apresenta uma fresta longitudinal que inunda o interior do vestíbulo e o terceiro é cego. Porém, os dois últimos apresentam-se decorados com painéis azulejares de grande qualidade plástica, com motivos fitomórficos e cestas de fruta, podendo ler-se, num deles, a seguinte inscrição: [...] Casa dos Penedos foi edificada no ano de 1921. Escalonado ao longo de vários pisos, no seu alçado poente destaca-se uma grande loggia e, nas extremidades do edifício impõem-se torreões oblíquos com cobertura de quatro águas. No interior do palácio é evidente o cuidado com que foram tratados os pequenos detalhes, destacando-se, no interior, os magníficos painéis de azulejos, as pinturas a fresco e outros elementos decorativos.

Heritage in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra
Carlos Machado Ribeiro Ferreira engaged the architect Raul Lino to build his small summer palace in Sintra. Despite the difficulty in terms of the site’s orogeny, the project succeeded in integrating the building and harmonising it with its surrounding natural and built landscape, organising the distribution of the various spaces on the basis of different shapes.
Three full blind arches stand at the main entrance, facing the road. The first arch corresponds to the door area, the second has a longitudinal opening that illuminates the interior of the vestibule and the third is totally blind. The latter two, however, are decorated with highly artistic tile panels with phytomorphic motifs and baskets of fruit, one of which bears the following inscription: [...] The Casa dos Penedos was built in the year 1921. Spread across several floors, reference should be made, on its western elevation, to a large loggia with oblique turrets and hipped roofs at the ends of the building. The care taken over the smallest detail inside the palace is very much in evidence. Particular reference should be made to its magnificent tile panels, frescoes and other decorative elements.
