O farol do Cabo da Roca foi mandado erigir pelo marquês de Pombal através de alvará datado de 1 de fevereiro de 1758. No entanto, a sua construção data de 1772, já em pleno reinado de D. Maria I. Em 1843, o farol foi alvo de benfeitorias e em 1897 procedeu-se à sua eletrificação.
Em 1990, o farol foi automatizado. Foi também nessa reforma e nos ulteriores trabalhos ali levados a cabo que os faroleiros foram praticamente dispensados, encontrando-se as casas térreas com forro azulejar encarnado e platibandas amareladas que percorrem os beirados quase sem utilização. É, pois, por entre as casas dos faroleiros que se ergue a torre setecentista com cunhais pétreos e forro azulejar branco, no topo, por guarda igualmente de pedra, encontrando-se a lanterna disposta ao centro, protegida por estrutura metálica vermelha.

The erection of the lighthouse at Cabo da Roca was commissioned by the Marquis of Pombal based on a warrant dated 1 February 1758. Its actual construction, however, dates back to 1772, during the reign of Queen Maria I. The lighthouse was refurbished in 1843, electrified in 1897 and automated in 1990.
It was also during this and latter rehabilitation works that the lighthouse keepers were practically dispensed with and its red-tile ground floor houses with their yellow platbands running along the edges of the roofs were left virtually uninhabited. The 18th century tower with its stone quoins topped with white tiles and a stone guard soars high above the houses of the lighthouse keepers. The lantern, positioned at the centre, is protected by a red metal structure.
